2009 Concerts
Rhodri Clarke - Concert
Sunday 6th December 2009 11a.m.
Since last performing at Home Hill, Rhodri has been busy performing as soloist, chamber musician and accompanying in a variety of settings. Before leaving Australia last year, he performed as soloist at the Adelaide Festival of Male Choirs at the Adelaide Convention Centre to an 1800 capacity audience. Again, as soloist, in September 2008, he gave a memorable performance of Liszt’s Rigoletto Paraphrase at Carnegie Hall, New York as part of a massed choir event. (He will also be performing this piece at the Home Hill concert!). In the same concert he also accompanied the world famous Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel. Towards the end of 2009 he moved from London to the Netherlands to live with his Tasmanian fiancée, Rosemary Lowry, who took up a post at a Dutch university as a post-doctoral researcher.
Highlights in 2009:
Rhodri was a prize-winner at the Cystadleuaeth Derfynol y Cyfeilio Piano Competition at the William Mathias Piano Centre, North Wales, as part of their new 2009 Piano Festival.
He was invited to perform on BBC Radio 3’s “In Tune” programme as a member of chamber music group The Musicall Compass.
Since living in the Netherlands, Rhodri has continued to give regular recitals in the UK, and has taken the opportunity to form collaborations with Dutch musicians, Femke Wesly, mezzo soprano and Peter-Paul van Beekum, conductor and bass-baritone. He has recntly given solo performances in Belgium and in his home town of ‘s Hertogenbosch.
In July 2009 he toured the UK with his chamber ensemble Bolivar Soloists, which specializes in bringing Venezuelan and other latin American music to the classical arena (see bolivarsoloists.com for details). Currently, the group is in the process of signing a contract with the record label Deutsche Gramaphon, to record a CD with the Mexican opera star Rolando Villazon which will include a promotional tour of all the major European cities in November/December 2010.
This time at the Home Hill concert in December, Rhodri will be focusing on some of the more challenging piano works by Chopin and Liszt, one of Beethoven’s best-loved sonatas the “Pathetique” as well as some other well-known classics.
